The Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM) serves seniors in Allegan, Ionia, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Newaygo, and Osceola counties by helping to provide person-centered care that empowers individuals to age in place.
Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) are a nationwide network of nonprofit agencies created by Congress to be one-stop resources for information about programs, services, and housing options. They were created in 1974 by the federal Older Americans Act with the mission of creating home and community-based services to maximize the independence and dignity of older adults. Michigan’s 16 AAAs are federally mandated to provide home and community-based services to older adults and people with disabilities. The AAAs work hand in hand with a statewide network of over 1,200 service providers, including county commissions on aging, senior centers, and home-health agencies. They also work with the Aging and Adult Services Agency (AASA), the state agency that oversees aging programs. Together, the AASA, AAAs, and local service providers are called "Michigan’s Aging Network.”
